Penguin Fin Facts

1. They are a bird that does not fly.

2. They live at the South Pole.

3. They also live in other places, but all locations are south of the equator.

4. The pouch of skin where some penguins store their eggs is called a brood pouch.

5. The way a penguin walks is called waddling.

6. The small pinkish shellfish that are a favorite food of penguins are krill.

7. A fast way for penguins to travel on land is tobogganing.

8. A place where penguins gather to build a nest is called a rookery.

9. Molting is when a penguin loses its old feathers as it grows new ones.

10. A Creche is many penguin chicks squeezing together to stay warm.

11. An Emperor penguin can grow to be 3 ½ feet tall.

12. Penguins can hold their breath underwater for 15 minutes.

13. Penguins swim.

14. They can dive to a depth of over 1,700 feet.

15. Female Emperor penguins lay their eggs in June which is the middle of winter in Antarctica.

16. As soon as the egg is laid the mother returns to the sea to eat.

17. The father keeps the egg safe and warm in its brood pouch.



Antarctica:
1. It is the harshest place in the world to live.

2. The average temperature is 40 degrees below zero, and that is in summer.

3. Very few animals call Antarctica home.
