Saturday, November 3 - Scat ID program
10am. Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Discovery Center - Ever wonder whose scat you find when hiking at the parks and why they put it in the middle of the trail? This hands-on program is not for the weak-of-stomach. Come learn how to id poop and create some clay models to take home. Will you make a carnivore pile, herbivore pellets, or omnivore mix? YOU decide! Register by Thursday, November 1 with $1.50 per child. Children must be 8 years old or above and accompanied by an adult.
Saturday, November 3 - Family Month Evening at Riverbend
7-9pm. Riverbend Recreation Area - November is designated by the state, as the month to focus on families. Come to Riverbend with your family and friends to enjoy an evening of free hayrides, night hikes, and refreshments by the fire.
Sunday, November 4 - Open house at the McKinnis House
1:30-4:30pm. Litzenberg Memorial Woods - Come talk with HPD staff about the history of the McKinnis family and the homestead site.
Monday, November 5 - Discovery Story: Hibernation
10am & 1pm. Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Discovery Center - For children ages 3-6 with an adult companion. Includes story, activities and a craft all about how some creatures spend the winter.
Saturday, November 10 - Binocular Astronomy
7pm. Riverbend Recreation Area, Shelter #5 - Don't buy that Christmas telescope - try binocular astronomy instead! Learn how to enhance your stargazing experience with Millstream Astronomy Club member, Neil Stewart, as he demonstrates how everyday household items can be transformed into scientific equipment bringing the stars closer to you. If the weather permits, we will view fall constellations.
Sunday, November 11 - The American Bald Eagle
3pm. Riverbend Recreation Area, Lodge - Show your patriotic spirit as we honor true heroes, our nation's veterans. Wear your red, white and blue as we celebrate Veteran's Day with a patriotic program using our nation's symbol - the American Bald Eagle. Diane Meyers of the Black Swamp Raptor Rehab will present the program on these magnificent birds. A permanently injured, non-releasable bird will be used.
Sunday, November 18 - Hibernate, Migrate, Survive
1-4pm. Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Discovery Center - As the cool weather approaches, animals are getting ready for the winter. We stay awake through the cold, snowy months; find out what other animals do at this Open House. Activities, crafts and information will be available.
Monday, November 19 - Wee Ones in the Park: Turkey Talk
10am & 1pm. Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Discovery Center - Come learn about this native wild bird. For toddlers three and under with an adult companion.
Friday, November 30 & Saturday, December 1 - Pioneer Tea
1:30pm. Litzenberg Memorial Woods, McKinnis House - McKinnis welcomes you to her home to learn about early pioneer holiday customs, hear live dulcimer music, drink hot tea and sample period tea bread. Register by Thurs., Nov. 30 with $6 per person. Space is limited.
Saturday, December 1 - Decorations with Natural Materials
9:30am-11:30am. Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Discovery Center
Beverly Atkins, author of Decorating with Natural Materials, will be offering a workshop at the Discovery Center. Gain hands on experience and the tricks of the trade while you make your own natural decorations. Register by Monday, Nov. 26 with $8 per person. Space limited and for adults only.
