Recent polls show that most people would rather have dental work performed than have their car repaired. They would rather know the pain that they will be put through, than face the unknown of auto repair.
We need our cars. They give us freedom, the ability to work great distances from our homes, choices in shopping and children shuttle services. There is a price to that freedom. Cars need regular maintenance and sometimes-unexpected repairs.
Stories abound about unscrupulous repairs and unfair billings. So how do you protect yourself and your wallet? Choose a AAA-approved facility. Go to the mechanic you know and trust. If new to the area, ask co-workers and new friends. Get a written estimate. If you don't feel comfortable, get a second opinion.
I have found that you get what you pay for in auto service. If an estimate is way cheaper, they had to have cut corners somewhere. Are they certified? Are they using quality parts?
Finally, ask to see your old parts. You don't need to take them with you, but by law you may see them.
Good luck, and safe driving!
