During the week of June 22-28, 2008, Millstream Career & Technology Center's Engineering & CAD Technologies College Tech Prep Showcase Team competed in the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City, Missouri. The team was awarded a gold medal for their first place finish. In past years, medals were awarded for scores alone. This year, the competition awarded only one medal for placement at the gold, silver, and bronze levels. The Millstream team claimed the top prize in the nation in the Tech Prep Manufacturing category. The members of the team are Tom Miller, Derek Schumaker, Collin Loch, and Dirk Frey, all Findlay High School students. The Engineering & CAD Technology instructor is Bill Shoop. The project was in partnership with Cummins Filtration, entitled "The Alignment Guide" which was for a press used to produce filters for Cummins Diesel engines. The Engineering Team initially toured the plant at Cummins and discovered they could come up with a better way of aligning the mold in the press. This could potentially save the company over $120,000 in ten years. The savings was calculated by including down time, loss of product through trial and error, wages, and reduced maintenance hours. Without this guide it could take a total of three shifts to make the adjustments with the press and the mold itself. With the guide, the operation time was reduced to three hours.
