"We chose the theme 'Lean on Me' because we feel that it reflects what we want to accomplish with this year's Days of Caring. We want the area's non-profit agencies to know that they can lean on volunteers to complete those much needed projects," said Candee Mackell, this year's Days of Caring chairperson. This is the second year that Mackell has chaired the event.

"It gratifies me to see the smiles on people's faces. I was raised to give back" said Siferd. Siferd was nominated by Michael Noggle, volunteer/guardianship program coordinator at the Agency on Aging. Her nomination noted that she has a caring heart and often takes a senior "under her wing that are lonely, grieving or depressed. She encourages them and puts a smile back on their faces."

When asked why she volunteers, she responded, "I have the attitude that kids will have a good time, if I help. I would rather have the teachers in the classroom than making copies and doing work that they can hand off.

The main attraction for this year's United Way event was the raffle drawing for the Harley Davidson Motorcycle. This fundraising event for the United Way was conceived by Jayne Allen and Lynne Calvelage of Coffee Amici in downtown Findlay.

Kurjan said the "In Reality" theme is intended to point out the harsh realities that exist within the community -- situations such as child abuse and lack of transportation -- which can only be properly addressed when programs and services provided by partner agencies are funded sufficiently.

The crowd was treated to live music played by The Civil Surfers and The Management to entertain all that attended. All the motorcycles that attended provided people an opportunity to see some fine examples of American craftsmanship lined up, and all seemed to be without a speck of dust on them. Refreshments of all kinds were available, and raffle tickets for to win the 2007 Harley Davidson were on hand.
