Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to record some interesting behavior of birds during the nesting season. These often form a lasting visual image. One of these is the Eastern Bluebird. This colorful species is a common nester in our area.

Our area has a variety of wildlife habitats, which results in a variety of birds. We have larger bodies of water such as quarries and up-ground reservoirs that are suitable sites for waterfowl and shorebirds.

Flocking is an interesting behavior of birds that often goes unnoticed. Seeing a flock of Geese or Ducks during migration can be a common sight. Those that I would like to discuss this month include Starlings, Crows, and Tree Swallows.

There are three species of birds, native to Ohio, that are close relatives- the Rock Dove (Pigeon), Mourning Dove, and Passenger Pigeon.

I was in our garage painting when the telephone rang. "What do you know about butterflies?" It was Sharlene Exline from Forest. "Very little," I quipped. Sharlene had observed a butterfly near her house and wanted to be sure of its identification.

I received a telephone call from Charolette Fry. She explained how she enjoys House Wrens and watches them at her home in Marion Township near McGuffey, OH. She stated that House Wrens use a nesting box near her house on a regular basis. She remarked that she enjoys the song of the House Wren and their "chat chat" alarm notes when the family cat or dog gets too close.
