There is a new night sound coming to your neighborhood. August and September nights are filled with a cacophony of familiar insect sounds. The annual cicada, tree crickets and the katydid are the most prevalent. This article will focus on the katydid.

Over the years, I have heard Great Horned Owl's courting hoots in late December. During the winter of 2003 I was a bit worried how much calling I would hear. As you may or may not know, the Ohio Great Horned population and other raptors took a hard hit in the summer of 2002 from the drought and West Nile virus. To the novice or folk trained outdoorsman, this may appear to be a good thing.

To feed or not to feed, that is the question. Some purest will say no to feeding wild birds. However, feeding, particularly winter-feeding, is important to some because it helps to keep birds alive and healthy during severe weather. This will also put them into better physical condition for the breeding season.

Animals have a variety of tolerances. They can include temperature, light and moisture. For example, if they are not able to tolerate a change in seasonal temperature above or below their tolerance range, they will either go into hibernation (cold), aestivation (hot) or they will need to leave the area (migrate).
